Our History

With the opening of Tadcaster Community Pool in 1995 - Tadcaster Swim Squad was established. From humble beginnings the squad has grown to over 100 members. In 2019, we expanded our training base to enter a partnership with York Sport becoming Tadcaster York Sport Swim Squad.

Members of the Squad not only enjoy success at County and Regional Championships, but regularly compete at the English and British Championships. We also have international athletes in our squad! Our swimmers have celebrated recent success in the World Special Olympics and European Down Syndrome Swimming Championships. Former swimmers have gone on to represent Wales at the Commonwealth Games and join prestigious college swim programmes in the USA.

In 2023, we were named Swim England North East Region Club of the Year - (Swimming), for our unwavering commitment to developing exceptional swimming talent and fostering a community spirit that has propelled us into the national spotlight. We were also nominated for the Swim England National Club of the Year - (Swimming) and Coach Vicky Holt was selected as a Swim England North East Development Programme Coach.

We are delighted that our Head Coach, Danny Martland, was presented with the 2023 Swim England North East Coaching Award - (Swimming). Danny’s commitment to guiding young swimmers toward their best performances had not gone unnoticed by our region. Danny was also nominated for the 2023 National Swim England Coach of the Year - (Swimming) Award.

In 2024, our success continued with our Head Coach, Danny Martland, being presented with the Swim England North East Region’s Coaching Award for Swimming. Danny was also selected as the Head Coach for the Swim England North East Region Talent Camp in 2024. Our coaching team’s talents were further recognised with our Coach Vicky Holt being nominated for a Swim England Coaching Award in in Swimming (inclusive of Masters and Para swimming), and being selected for the second year running as a Swim England North East Development Programme Coach.. At the Swim England National Awards in 2024, Head Coach, Danny Martland won the National Swimming (Development Coach of the Year, recognising his expertise and experience.

Tadcaster York Sport Swim Squad drive to be an inclusive, diverse club which champions swimmers of all needs and abilities, led to the club receiving the prestigious Swim England National Inclusion Impact Award in 2024.

Tadcaster York Sport Swim Squad has always promoted inclusion within the club, maintaining strong links with the Stingrays disability Swim Squad and welcoming a diverse range of swimmers who have a range of needs. In 2024, Tadcaster York Sport Swim Squad became the first club in the UK to introduce a ‘Transplant Swimmer’ awards category for its Swim England Licensed Galas, supporting swimmers from within and outside of the club and leading Swim England to bring competitive swimmers who are organ transplant recipients, into their Inclusion and Diversity planning.

Our Vision

Our mission is to instil a life-long love of swimming and to build a programme of excellence in training and character development within a supportive and open environment, where every swimmer has the opportunity to achieve their potential and compete at the highest level.

The Club is focused on the long-term development of its swimmers, providing its members with opportunities to develop their swimming ability with swimmers of a similar standard through well-structured swim and land training sessions.

Our Swimmers

  • Work hard and are accountable for the amount of effort they put into their programme of training.

  • Seek to fulfil their potential as an athlete.

  • Have fun while being challenged.

  • Thrive in a supportive team environment.

  • Celebrate their successes and learn from their disappointments.

  • Develop their personal and life skills.

  • Build memories for life.

Our Training Facilities

We are proud to hold training sessions at some of the most highly sought after venues across Tadcaster & York.

Our home pools are Tadcaster Community Pool and York Sport. We also hold sessions at Queen Margaret’s School, Escrick.

Land training venues include Archbishop Holgate’s School in York and Tadcaster Grammar School.

Accessibility

We welcome all swimmers who would like to experience the opportunity to swim with us. We will work with swimmers to ensure that all of our training sessions are accessible and appropriately planned. Our training facilities are fully accessible  - this includes blue badge parking, full wheelchair accessibility, suitable handrails and appropriate changing spaces. Both Tadcaster Community Pool and York Sport Village have a hoist to support access in and out of the water.

We work closely with Tadcaster Stingrays - offering opportunities for main squad training for swimmers with disabilities - however enquiries from all young people to join our team are welcome.

In 2024 we were exceptionally proud to be the first club in England to include a ‘Transplant Swimmer’ category at our Swim England licensed meets, providing swimmers who have received solid organ transplants with the opportunity to compete in licensed meets with parity, for the first time in the UK. Our work has inspired other clubs to introduce the ‘Transplant Swimmer’ category, and has inspired Swim England to consider how they can include transplant swimmers in their Equality, Diversity and Inclusion planning. We have already seen a rise in the number of young transplant swimmers who engage in competitive swimming, as a result of this change.

We are committed to being an inclusive club which welcomes, supports and encourages every individual to achieve their potential.
